Purpose:

A mixed-traffic locomotive, at home on semi-fast passenger trains and on freight work. 115 of the class were built at Horwich and Doncaster and they could be found on all the Regions except the Western, most being allocated to the Southern and Scottish. No 76077 was withdrawn in 1967 and was brought to Toddington from Barry some 20 years later.
